How to plan a week of dinners on a budget

You can plan a full week of dinners in about 20 minutes. Here is the method we use.

1. Set a number

Pick a weekly grocery budget for dinners. For a family of 4, $100–$150 is common in the US. Write it at the top of the page.

2. Check what you have

Look in the fridge, freezer, and pantry. Anything that needs using goes into a dinner first.

3. Pick 7 dinners with shared ingredients

4. Write the list by aisle

Group the list the way the store is laid out. You walk once, skip extras, and finish faster. See our grocery list by aisle template.

5. Add rough prices

Write a guess next to each item and add them up. If you are over, swap one dinner for a bean night.

6. Post the plan

Put it on the fridge. Nobody asks "what's for dinner?" if the answer is on the door.

Example

Our free sample week feeds 4 for about $124 using this exact method.
